Dillingham is located at 59.0567 N and 158.5086 W, making us 1006 Km/625 miles from the Monster Lobe.
I have no idea how to convert latitude and longitude into miles so I used a converter on the NOAA website. I know that the conversion rate for km/miles is 1k=.621371 miles.
(I will have to send you the centimeter conversion in a separate post because our IT department is taking our server down in a few minutes.)
The delta between two Lat / Long coordinates can't easily be converted into miles. Unless you're able to work celestial navigation like my father, that is. Since we're not living on a flat cartesian plane, the distance between longitudinal lines changes with the latitude. Here's a quick little calculator I dug up from NOAA: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gccalc.shtml
ReplyDeleteHmmm....the little calculator you dug up is the same one I referenced in my blog. Looking at others' posts I saw algebra (not my strong suit) and online I saw calculus used to convert Lat/Long into miles. Not a celestial navigator but I have always wanted to understand it more.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the measure in cm is 100,600,000 cm (1K=100,000 cm).
Colin, I want to meet your Dad!
ReplyDeleteKaren, can you post a picture or type out the work you used to get to your cm answer? Ideally, you would convert from miles to km to m to cm. It's not that it couldn't be done faster, but the logic is easier to see with the fraction conversions.
Thanks!
