STEM LESSON IDEAS

Photo by Guido Grosse This image is taken from the top of the debris flow that is closest to the Highway, about 75 yards. It is moving downslope at about 3 yards per year, and is accelerating. The bending trees are being overrun by the advancing debris.2012

Photo by Guido Grosse  The debris flow is visible from the Dalton Highway. The lobe (middle of the frame) is moving toward the highway, picking up debris and toppling trees. 2012

I need to discover to "original" ideas for the STEM extended lesson.  This is difficult, as I have previously discussed, as I am not the creative type. So, my "original" ideas are probably not that original.

IDEA #1:  Have the students work on ideas for diverting the Monster Lobe from the Dalton Highway.  More exactly, the students should be working to figure out how to keep the debris from "dumping" on the highway.
IDEA #2:  Have students develop ideas for destroying the Monster Lobe.  This would include deciding what the consequences of this action would have on the environment, the Dalton Highway and the Pipeline.
Both ideas would include the students putting forth ideas as to how the Monster Lobe developed.  The ideas would use Minecraft.  An extension of both ideas would be the effect of the Monster Lobe on a town (if the Lobe was located elsewhere).

Stem Ideas that I would be interested in covering in class.  Some ideas include:
How the density of Minecraft blocks can be figured?
More information on the mass, weight and gravity on physical applications, such as TNT explosives, ice movement.
     Physics of movements.
     Explosives effects on different densities.

General ideas about the class on 2/10.  I loved conversions.  Okay, I love math.  I really enjoyed the real-life applications of the concept.  I also am very excited about creating a world in Minecraft.  That is next up in my goals.

  1. I really love the extension idea considering how their solutions would differ if it was a town in jeopardy and not the highway. Puts great perspective on the project! You could have students choose between ideas 1 and 2 and describe why they chose one idea over the other, or maybe they will decide to divert the highway! I am glad you are considering using the Monster Lobe project!

The physics in Minecraft is an interesting area that I would like to explore as well.
